Installation in 8 steps

01

Check the email with your license key

After your order with Karinex, you will receive an email with the Visual Studio 2026 product key as well as a download link to the official Microsoft installer. Be sure to also check your spam folder.

02

Download the Visual Studio Installer

Click the supplied download link to download the Visual Studio Installer (vs_professional.exe) from Microsoft. The file is small (about 4 MB) and downloads the main package later over the internet.

03

Run the installer as administrator

Right-click the downloaded file → “Run as administrator”. Confirm the Windows security prompt with “Yes”. Read and accept the license terms.

04

Select your workloads

Visual Studio installs only the components you actually need. Select the appropriate workloads: “ASP.NET and web development” for web projects, “.NET desktop development” for WPF/WinForms, “Desktop development with C++” for native applications, “Mobile development with .NET” for MAUI, or “Game development with Unity” for games. You can install additional workloads later at any time.

05

Import an existing configuration (optional)

If you already use Visual Studio 2022, you can migrate your existing configuration. Via the “Import” tab you can also load a .vsconfig file – ideal for teams with standardized setups.

06

Start the installation

Click “Install”. Depending on your workload selection and internet connection, the installation takes 15–60 minutes. Visual Studio 2026 is installed side by side with Visual Studio 2022 – existing projects remain untouched.

07

Sign in with your Microsoft account

On first launch, Visual Studio prompts you to sign in with your Microsoft account. If you don't have an account yet, create one for free at account.microsoft.com. The license key is linked to this account.

08

Enter your license key

Help → Register product → Enter product key. Paste the key from your Karinex email and confirm. Visual Studio 2026 Professional is now activated for life.

Carry over extensions from Visual Studio 2022

Over 4,000 extensions that work with Visual Studio 2022 are also compatible with the 2026 version. A manual reinstallation is not required.

01
During installation: enable the option “Include installed extensions from the Visual Studio Marketplace”.
02
After installation: Extensions → Manage Extensions → select “Import from Visual Studio 2022”.
03
If needed: open the Visual Studio Marketplace directly from the IDE and reinstall extensions individually.

Enable GPT-5 Copilot

Visual Studio 2026 uses GPT-5 from OpenAI for code completion, the Debugger Agent and the AI Profiler. Activation is done through your Microsoft account.

01
Tools → Options → GitHub Copilot → click “Sign in”.
02
Sign in with your GitHub account (free for students and open-source maintainers).
03
Adaptive Paste, Debugger Agent and AI Profiler are available immediately.

Common problems & solutions

Installer aborts at “Installing required components”

Solution: temporarily disable your antivirus, run Windows Update and restart the installation. Make sure there is at least 50 GB of free disk space on the system drive.

“The license key is invalid”

Solution: paste the key without spaces; hyphens are recognized automatically. Check your internet connection – activation happens online via Microsoft servers. If problems persist, contact Karinex Support.

Visual Studio 2026 won't start

Solution: run “Repair” from the Visual Studio Installer. If problems persist, start Visual Studio in safe mode: devenv.exe /SafeMode.

Extensions from VS 2022 don't work

Solution: check whether the extension is listed in the Marketplace as VS 2026 compatible. More complex tools such as ReSharper may require an update. For legacy extensions from VS 2019 or earlier, a rewrite is usually necessary.

Installation extremely slow

Solution: run the installation on an SSD (an HDD slows it down by a factor of 5–10). On a slow internet connection, reduce the workloads or use Microsoft's offline installer.
