The Windows 11 ISO is available free of charge from Microsoft – the product key is not. This guide shows you where to download the official disk image in German, which ISO variant fits your PC, how to turn it into a bootable USB stick, and what you need afterwards for permanent activation.
- The ISO file is a free original image from Microsoft – no product key required, no time limit on the download
- There is a single ISO for all editions (multi-edition): only the key you enter decides between Home and Pro
- You choose language and architecture on the download page – "German" and x64 for practically any current PC
- Expect around 5–7 GB of download size and a USB stick from 8 GB
- Without activation, Windows 11 permanently runs with a watermark and locked personalization – an original key costs from 11,90 € with us
What is the Windows 11 ISO file?
An ISO file is a complete image of an installation disc in a single file. It contains exactly what used to sit on the Windows DVD: the Windows 11 installer, all system files and the setup program. The file format comes from the ISO 9660 standard for CD and DVD images – hence the name.
For you, that means three things: you can write the file to a USB stick and boot from it, you can mount it directly in Windows ("mount") and start an upgrade from it, or you can attach it to a virtual machine. One and the same file covers all three routes.
What the ISO does not contain: a product key. The image is the software, the key is the licence – two separate things that Microsoft deliberately keeps apart.
Is the Windows 11 ISO free?
Yes. Microsoft provides the Windows 11 disk image free of charge and without registration on its official download page. There is no trial period, no expiry date for the download and no limit on the number of attempts.
However, only the installation is free. After setup, Windows reports itself as not activated: you see a watermark in the bottom right of the desktop, personalization settings (background, colours, lock screen) are locked, and Windows reminds you at regular intervals to activate. You still receive security updates, but running the system permanently and in compliance requires a valid product key.
In short: the download costs nothing, the licence does. Anyone who already had a digital licence on the device – for example after an upgrade from Windows 10 – is usually reactivated automatically after reinstalling on the same hardware.
Where can I download the Windows 11 ISO in German?
The only source you should trust without reservation is Microsoft itself: the page microsoft.com/de-de/software-download/windows11. It always delivers the current Windows 11 version, and the language selection sits right in the download dialog.
- Open the German Microsoft download page for Windows 11.
- Scroll to the section "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)".
- Select the product in the drop-down and confirm with Download.
- The language selection now appears: choose "German" and confirm.
- You receive a download link valid for 24 hours. It starts the download of the ISO file.
Important: you set the language at this point and cannot change it afterwards. Anyone who accidentally downloads the English ISO installs an English Windows – a language pack can be added later, but downloading the right one from the start is cleaner.
Keep away from ISO files from download portals, file hosters or torrents. They are often outdated, sometimes altered – and you have no way of checking what else is hiding in the image.
Which ISO for Windows 11 is the right one?
This question sounds more complicated than it is. For normal PC use, Microsoft publishes a single image – a so-called multi-edition ISO. It contains Home, Pro, Education and Pro for Workstations together. Which edition ends up running is decided solely by the product key you enter.
So there are only two things left for you to decide:
- Architecture: x64 for any PC or laptop with an Intel or AMD processor. ARM64 only for devices with an ARM chip, such as the Surface Pro X or Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon. There is no 32-bit version of Windows 11.
- Language: German, if you want a German-language system. The language of the ISO determines the display language of the installation.
You only choose the edition when you buy the key. For everyday use, Office and gaming, Windows 11 Home is enough; anyone who needs BitLocker, Remote Desktop as a host or Hyper-V should get Windows 11 Pro. The detailed comparison is in our guide Windows 11 Home or Pro – the honest decision.
The three official download routes compared
The Microsoft page offers three buttons to choose from. All three deliver the same unaltered Microsoft image – they differ only in what you end up holding.
| Route | Result | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|
| Installation Assistant | Direct upgrade of the running system | Updating an existing Windows 10 or 11 without data loss |
| Media Creation Tool | Ready-made bootable USB stick or ISO file | Fresh install when no second PC is available |
| Disk image (ISO) | Plain ISO file for free reuse | Virtual machines, Rufus, multiple PCs, archiving |
If you're unsure: the ISO download is the most flexible route. You can always turn an ISO into a USB stick later; the reverse is not possible.
System requirements for Windows 11
Before you download 5–7 GB, it's worth checking the hardware. Windows 11's minimum requirements are noticeably stricter than Windows 10's – above all because of TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, at least 2 cores, 64-bit, on Microsoft's compatibility list |
| Memory | 4 GB (8 GB recommended) |
| Storage | 64 GB free |
| Firmware | UEFI with Secure Boot enabled |
| TPM | Version 2.0 |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 compatible, WDDM 2.0 driver |
| Display | At least 9 inches, 720p, 8 bits per colour channel |
Microsoft's free PC Health Check tool checks in seconds whether your device meets the requirements. TPM and Secure Boot are disabled by default on many PCs and can be switched on in the UEFI setup – often that alone is enough to turn a supposedly incompatible machine into a compatible one.
Transferring the ISO to a USB stick
For a clean reinstall you need a bootable medium. A USB stick from 8 GB is enough; it will be completely erased in the process.
- Connect the USB stick and back up any existing data – creation formats the stick.
- Start the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft download page (the simplest way), or alternatively use Rufus if you have already downloaded the ISO.
- Select "USB flash drive" as the target, then confirm language and architecture.
- Creation takes 15–40 minutes depending on your internet connection and the stick.
- To install, restart the PC and select the USB stick in the boot menu (usually F12, F11 or Esc).
You will find the complete installation with all UEFI settings and screenshots in our step-by-step guide to installing Windows 11.
Opening the ISO without a USB stick
For an upgrade of the running system you don't need a stick at all. Windows 10 and 11 can mount ISO files directly:
- Right-click the ISO file in Explorer.
- Choose "Mount" – Windows sets up the file as a virtual drive.
- In the new drive, start setup.exe and follow the assistant.
- After installation, remove the virtual drive again via "Eject".
This route keeps your files, programs and settings – provided you choose the option in setup to keep personal files and apps.
After installation: activating Windows 11
Activation itself takes less than a minute:
- Open Settings (Windows key + I).
- Go to System → Activation.
- Under "Change product key" click Change.
- Enter the 25-character product key and confirm.
- Stay connected to the internet – activation runs automatically via Microsoft's servers.

The product key: what the ISO doesn't bring along
An original product key doesn't have to cost 145 €. As a used volume licence, the same Microsoft key is legally available for significantly less – permitted by the CJEU ruling "UsedSoft/Oracle" (C-128/11) of 03.07.2012, which expressly allows the resale of exhausted software licences within the EU. Frequently asked questions about the Windows 11 ISO
How big is the Windows 11 ISO?
Depending on version and language, around 5–7 GB. Also plan extra space on the drive for the installation – Microsoft states 64 GB as the minimum.
How long is the download link valid?
The link generated by Microsoft expires after 24 hours. After that, simply generate a new one on the same page; the ISO itself remains free.
Does the ISO contain Home and Pro?
Yes. The standard image is a multi-edition ISO. Which edition is installed and activated is decided by the product key you enter.
Can I upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 with the ISO?
Yes. Mount the ISO in your running Windows 10 and start setup.exe – files and programs are kept, provided the hardware meets the requirements. Since Windows 10 has not received regular security updates since 14 October 2025, switching is overdue for most users anyway. You'll find a direct comparison of both systems in Windows 10 vs. Windows 11.
Does installation work without TPM 2.0?
Officially, no. Tools like Rufus can bypass the check, but Microsoft does not support such installations and reserves the right to withhold updates from them. First check in the UEFI whether TPM and Secure Boot are simply disabled – that's often the case.
Do I need a Microsoft account?
Not for the ISO download. For the initial setup of Windows 11 Home, the setup usually requires a Microsoft account; Windows 11 Pro still allows a local account.
Is downloading from third-party portals dangerous?
At the very least it's unnecessary. The ISO is freely available from Microsoft – any other source only brings the risk of an altered or outdated file, with no benefit whatsoever.
Conclusion
Downloading the Windows 11 ISO is the easy part: an official Microsoft page, the right language, one click – and after 5–7 GB you have an unaltered original image that works for both Home and Pro. The two steps before and after are more involved: checking the hardware for TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, and activating permanently after installation.
That is exactly what you need the product key for, which the ISO deliberately does not include – as an original licence from 11,90 €, delivered within minutes by email.
