The decision: proven stability or new features?
In 2025, Microsoft offers two strong Office versions as a perpetual licence: Office 2021 and the new Office 2024. Both start at 9,90 EUR with us. Both run without a subscription. Both include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more. But the differences are real – and they affect your daily work.
Office 2021 has been on the market since October 2021. Millions of users work with it every day. The software is mature, stable and optimised for Windows 10/11 as well as macOS. Office 2024 was released in October 2024 and brings AI features, improved collaboration and more modern interfaces. It requires Windows 11 or macOS Ventura.
This comparison shows you which version fits your setup – technically, functionally and financially.
System requirements: who runs where?
Office 2021 runs on Windows 10 (from version 1809) and Windows 11. On the Mac you need macOS Big Sur (11) or newer. 4 GB RAM is enough, 4 GB of free storage too. A 1280×768 display is sufficient. Office 2021 is the last version that fully supports Windows 10 – important if your computer cannot update to Windows 11.
Office 2024 requires Windows 11 (from version 21H2) or macOS Ventura (13). Older systems are excluded. Microsoft relies on more modern APIs and security standards. RAM and storage requirements stay the same, but the processor requirements increase slightly. If your PC is Windows 11-capable, no problem. If not, Office 2021 is your only perpetual-licence option.
| Criterion | Office 2021 | Office 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Windows version | Windows 10 (1809+) / 11 | Windows 11 (21H2+) |
| macOS version | Big Sur (11+) | Ventura (13+) |
| RAM | 4 GB | 4 GB |
| Storage | 4 GB | 4 GB |
| End of support | October 2026 | October 2029 |
Feature differences: what's new in 2024?
Office 2024 brings three major innovations: AI-powered functions, improved collaboration and performance optimisations. In Excel you'll see dynamic arrays with XLOOKUP and FILTER – these functions are completely missing in 2021. PowerPoint offers Cameo (camera integration in slides) and Recording Studio with automatic subtitles. Word gets improved comment functions and a redesigned search bar.
The AI features in Office 2024 are pared down compared to Microsoft 365, but present: intelligent text suggestions in Outlook, automatic image alt texts in PowerPoint, advanced data types in Excel. Office 2021 has none of these AI functions – it is the pre-AI era.
Office 2021 is no feature dwarf. You get all the classic tools: VLOOKUP, pivot tables, SmartArt, collaboration comments (limited), PDF export, charts. For 90% of Office users these functions are completely sufficient. The question is: do you need the new 10%?
Performance and stability
Office 2021 has been in use for three years. Bugs are fixed, updates run stable. The software opens large Excel files (50+ MB) reliably, Word doesn't hang on complex documents, PowerPoint renders animations smoothly. Anyone who puts stability above new features will find their foundation here.
Office 2024 is younger. The first version from October 2024 had minor bugs (especially on macOS), which Microsoft fixed in December 2024. Performance tests show: Excel calculations run about 15% faster in 2024 (especially with large formulas), PowerPoint exports are 10% faster. The difference is measurable, but barely noticeable in everyday use – unless you work daily with huge data sets.
Both versions are stable enough for professional work. Office 2021 has the advantage of long-term field testing, Office 2024 the advantage of a more modern code base.
Price comparison: what costs you what?
At KARINEX, Office 2024 Home starts at 9,90 EUR. Office 2021 Professional Plus also starts at 9,90 EUR. Office 2021 Home & Business (with Outlook and Mac support) from 9,90 EUR. Office 2021 Standard from 8,90 EUR.
Microsoft's official prices range from 149 EUR (Home & Student 2024) to 439 EUR (Professional Plus 2024). Our licences are original keys from volume licensing programmes – legal, permanently activatable, without a subscription trap. You pay once, use forever.
The price difference between 2021 and 2024 with us is minimal. So the question is not 'What can I afford?', but 'What do I need technically?'. If your system runs Windows 11 and you want new features, choose 2024. If you have Windows 10 or are looking for maximum stability, choose 2021.

Get it now →Support periods: how long for updates?
Office 2021 receives security updates until October 2026. After that, no more patches. The software keeps running, but security gaps remain open. For private users often no problem (if you don't open unknown files every day), for companies critical.
Office 2024 receives updates until October 2029. Five years of support from release – Microsoft's standard cycle. That gives you three more years of security than Office 2021. If you buy today and want to use the software for five years, 2024 is the more logical choice.
Who should choose Office 2021?
You have Windows 10 and don't want to upgrade to Windows 11. Your Mac runs macOS Monterey or older. You work with Office every day, but the new Excel functions (dynamic arrays) are irrelevant to your workflows. You value mature software without teething troubles. You want maximum compatibility with older systems (e.g. on a network with other Office 2021 users). Price plays no role, because both versions cost the same with us – here it's the technology that decides.
Concrete scenarios: self-employed people with a proven workflow who don't need AI. Students on older laptops. Companies with Windows 10 fleets that will run for another two years. Home users who use Office for letters, spreadsheets and presentations – not for power features.
Who should choose Office 2024?
You have Windows 11 or macOS Ventura/Sonoma. You work with large Excel files and benefit from XLOOKUP/FILTER. You regularly create PowerPoint presentations with video elements (Cameo feature). You want five years of security updates instead of two. You like modern UI details (redesigned ribbons, smoother animations). You occasionally work collaboratively and need improved comment functions.
Concrete scenarios: data analysts who need Excel power. Trainers and teachers who create video presentations. Small teams that exchange and version Office files. Tech-savvy users who want to try out new features. Anyone who buys today and still wants updates in 2028.
Migration and compatibility
Files between Office 2021 and 2024 are fully compatible – with one restriction: if you use new functions in 2024 (e.g. XLOOKUP in Excel), a 2021 user will see error messages. The file opens, but the formula doesn't work. The other way around is no problem: 2024 reads all 2021 files without errors.
Both versions save in the .docx/.xlsx/.pptx format. Cloud sync (OneDrive, SharePoint) works identically. Macros (VBA) run in both versions – Microsoft has not changed the VBA engine. Add-ins (third-party plugins) work in both in most cases, but check with the manufacturer.
Switching from 2021 to 2024? Easy. Uninstall 2021, install 2024, activate with a new key. Your settings (AutoCorrect, templates, custom ribbons) have to be transferred manually – Microsoft does not offer an automatic migration assistant.
Purchase recommendation: the decision matrix
Choose Office 2021 if your system is Windows 10 or your Mac is older than macOS Ventura. Choose Office 2024 if you have Windows 11/macOS Ventura+ AND actively need at least one new feature (XLOOKUP, Cameo, AI texts). Choose Office 2021 if stability is more important than new features. Choose Office 2024 if you want to use the software for longer than three years and need security updates until 2029.
At KARINEX both cost almost the same. The decision is technical, not financial. Our tip: if your system is compatible, choose 2024 – you buy yourself three more years of support and have future-proofing. If your system is Windows 10, choose Office 2021 Professional Plus – it is the most powerful Office version that runs on Windows 10.
