With Office 2024, Microsoft offers two perpetual-license versions that look similar at first glance. The difference is in the details – and it's precisely that detail that decides whether you save 50 euros or hit functional limits later on.
Office 2024 Home is aimed at home users and families. Professional Plus is the full version for businesses and power users. Both are one-time-purchase licenses with no subscription obligation. But which features justify the price difference?
The core differences at a glance
Office 2024 Home includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. That's enough for homework, personal budgets and presentations for the club evening. Professional Plus adds on top: Outlook, Access, Publisher and Skype for Business.
But the real difference isn't just the number of apps. Professional Plus offers advanced Excel features such as Power Query, Power Pivot and advanced data modelling. Anyone working with large datasets or running complex analyses will quickly hit limits with Home.
Outlook is missing entirely from the Home version. For many users a deal-breaker: anyone who wants to manage their emails locally rather than in the browser needs Professional Plus or has to fall back on free alternatives.

Who Office 2024 Home is really worth it for
Do you write job applications, maintain a household spreadsheet and occasionally put together photo books in PowerPoint? Home is perfectly sufficient. The core apps are identical to the Professional version – only the extension tools are missing.
Important: Home may not be used commercially. Anyone who writes invoices on the side or works for clients is violating the licence terms. Microsoft defines commercial use broadly: self-employed people working from home also fall under it.
Students benefit from Home if they aren't running database projects. For term papers and presentations the feature set is enough. Anyone studying business administration or data science, however, will miss Power Pivot.
Families can install Home on one PC. For multiple devices you need multiple licences – or you opt for Microsoft 365, which however comes with subscription costs.
When Professional Plus is the better choice
As soon as money is involved, there's no way around Professional Plus. The licence explicitly permits commercial use. Freelancers, sole traders and agencies are on the safe side.
For many, Outlook alone justifies the surcharge. The desktop version syncs multiple email accounts, manages calendars offline and offers rules for automatic sorting. Anyone handling 50+ emails a day saves hours per week.
Access is Microsoft's database tool. Not sexy, but indispensable for small CRM systems, inventory management or customer databases. Alternatives like Airtable cost a monthly fee – Access is paid for once.
Publisher fills the gap between Word and InDesign. Flyers, brochures and newsletters can be laid out far more precisely than in Word. For marketing teams and clubs a real win.
Excel power tools: the hidden bonus
Power Query and Power Pivot sound like IT jargon. But they aren't. Power Query imports data from various sources (CSV, web, databases) and prepares it automatically. Anyone who creates Excel reports every month automates hours of manual work with it.
Power Pivot extends Excel with real data modelling. You can process millions of rows, define relationships between tables and use DAX formulas. A must for controlling, sales analysis and financial planning.
These tools are completely missing from Office 2024 Home. They can't be unlocked afterwards either – you'd have to upgrade to Professional Plus.

Both versions are perpetual licences. You buy once, activate on one PC and use the software indefinitely. No subscription, no monthly costs, no cloud requirement.
Activation works via a product key that you receive by email. Download directly from Microsoft servers, installation in under 10 minutes. The key is tied to your hardware – when changing PCs you can deactivate the licence and reinstall.
Updates are provided for the lifecycle of Office 2024, typically 5-7 years. After that the software keeps running but no longer receives new features. Microsoft delivers security updates for longer.
Price comparison: what does the difference really cost?

Mac users: the special situation
Office 2024 is also available for macOS. Here the Home version is called Office 2024 Home and Business for Mac. It includes Outlook – unlike the Windows Home version. Microsoft treats Mac users differently: the Business variant is mandatory, even for home users.
Professional Plus is not available for Mac as a standalone. Mac users either opt for Home and Business or for Microsoft 365. Anyone who needs Access and Publisher has to go with Windows – these apps were never ported to macOS.
Upgrade or fresh install?
Anyone coming from Office 2021 or 2019 can install Office 2024 alongside it or uninstall the old version. There is no direct upgrade – you install fresh and activate with the new key.
Your documents, templates and settings are retained. Office 2024 detects old installations and carries over the configuration. You'll have to set up your email accounts in Outlook once again.
Office 2024 brings new AI features, improved collaboration and modern designs. The jump from 2019 is worth it. From 2021 the difference is smaller – here the price is the deciding factor.
